Slag Remover for Foundry & Metallurgy

A slag remover is a granular or powder metallurgical material formulated to bind, coagulate, and separate slag from molten metal. Once added to the molten bath or metal surface, the slag remover reacts physically and thermally with slag components, causing impurities to agglomerate and float for easy removal.

Unlike simple fluxes, slag removers are designed to work efficiently without excessive metal loss or chemical contamination. They form a protective and insulating slag layer, improving slag fluidity while minimizing oxidation of the molten metal underneath.

Product Usage Method

1. Iron ladle: After filling the molten iron ladle with molten iron, take an appropriate amount of this product and sprinkle it on the surface to quickly adhere the floating slag on the surface of the molten iron. Use a slag removal plate to remove the floating slag in one go.

2. Fan shaped ladle: When the fan-shaped ladle is filled with molten iron, sprinkle an appropriate amount of product on the surface, quickly remove it with an iron rake, and then evenly sprinkle an appropriate amount of product on the surface to form a protective film before pouring.

3. When the iron water in the induction furnace is heated to the slag removal temperature, take an appropriate amount of this product and sprinkle it into the furnace. Then, use a garbage stick or iron rod to remove it. The product can remove the slag and oxide on the surface of the iron.

Product Application

The stainless Tz series slag agglomerator is non-toxic and odorless, free of harmful components. It's suitable for slag removal in iron water and does not produce dust or pollute the environment. It has high dispersion, good slag agglomeration performance, fast bonding speed, good film-forming properties, and quick slag removal.

This product uses an adsorption mechanism based on cohesive bonding. It has a high heat-resistant degree, does not melt itself, and does not produce secondary slag. The film formed on the iron water surface not only adsorbs and blocks molten slag but also has excellent insulation properties, effectively preventing iron water oxidation.

It's used for covering and insulating sand mold risers in steel castings and investment casting risers. Its appearance is a reddish-brown powder, non-toxic and odorless, with no harmful components.

Slag remover is a specialized metallurgical additive designed to efficiently separate and remove slag and non-metallic impurities from molten metal. It is widely used in foundry and metallurgical operations to improve metal cleanliness, reduce oxidation losses, and enhance casting quality.

During melting and holding processes, slag forms on the surface of molten metal due to oxidation, flux reactions, and impurity accumulation. If not properly removed, slag can lead to defects such as inclusions, porosity, surface imperfections, and reduced mechanical performance of cast products. By applying a suitable slag remover, foundries can achieve faster slag separation, cleaner molten metal, and more stable production conditions.

Slag removers are suitable for a wide range of metals, including cast iron, steel, aluminum, copper, and their alloys, and are compatible with various furnace types such as induction furnaces, electric arc furnaces, and ladles.

What Is a Slag Remover?

A slag remover is a granular or powder metallurgical material formulated to bind, coagulate, and separate slag from molten metal. Once added to the molten bath or metal surface, the slag remover reacts physically and thermally with slag components, causing impurities to agglomerate and float for easy removal.

Unlike simple fluxes, slag removers are designed to work efficiently without excessive metal loss or chemical contamination. They form a protective and insulating slag layer, improving slag fluidity while minimizing oxidation of the molten metal underneath.

Depending on application requirements, slag removers can be tailored for different metals, temperatures, and furnace environments.

How Slag Remover Works

The effectiveness of a slag remover is based on multiple mechanisms working simultaneously during molten metal treatment:

  • Slag coagulation: Fine slag particles are bonded together into larger masses, making them easier to separate from molten metal.
  • Improved slag fluidity: The slag becomes more fluid and mobile, allowing faster and cleaner removal.
  • Metal-slag separation: The slag remover reduces metal entrapment in slag, minimizing metal loss.
  • Thermal insulation: A protective layer forms on the molten metal surface, reducing heat loss and oxidation.

By enhancing these mechanisms, slag removers significantly improve molten metal cleanliness and process efficiency.

Key Benefits of Using Slag Remover

Improved Metal Cleanliness

Slag removers effectively remove oxides, dross, and non-metallic inclusions from molten metal. Cleaner metal leads to fewer casting defects, improved surface quality, and better mechanical properties in finished products.

Reduced Metal Loss

By preventing excessive metal entrapment in slag, slag removers help reduce yield loss. This is especially important in aluminum and copper melting, where metal loss can significantly impact production costs.

Enhanced Casting Quality

Cleaner molten metal results in fewer defects such as inclusions, porosity, and surface blemishes. This improves overall casting consistency and reduces rework and scrap rates.

Energy Efficiency and Temperature Stability

The insulating slag layer formed by slag removers helps maintain molten metal temperature, reducing energy consumption and improving furnace efficiency.

Easy Operation

Slag removers are easy to apply and remove, requiring no complex equipment or procedures. This makes them suitable for both manual and automated foundry operations.

Types of Slag Removers

Slag removers can be classified based on metal type and application conditions:

  • Slag remover for cast iron and steel – Designed to handle high-temperature environments and dense oxide slag.
  • Slag remover for aluminum and aluminum alloys – Optimized to minimize metal loss and prevent excessive oxidation.
  • Slag remover for copper and copper alloys – Formulated for chemical compatibility and effective slag separation.

Customized formulations can be developed to suit specific furnace types, alloy compositions, and operating temperatures.

Applications of Slag Remover

Foundry Industry

In foundry operations, slag removers are used during melting, holding, and pouring stages to ensure clean molten metal. Typical applications include:

  • Cast iron and ductile iron melting
  • Steel casting and alloy steel processing
  • Aluminum and aluminum alloy foundries

Slag removers help reduce inclusions and improve casting yield across various casting methods.

Metallurgical Furnaces

Slag removers are widely applied in different metallurgical furnace systems, including:

  • Induction furnaces
  • Electric arc furnaces (EAF)
  • Ladles and holding furnaces

They support efficient slag management and stable molten metal conditions.

Non-Ferrous Metal Processing

For aluminum, copper, and other non-ferrous metals, slag removers help control dross formation, reduce oxidation losses, and improve metal recovery rates.

How to Use Slag Remover

  1. Heat the molten metal to the required operating temperature.
  2. Sprinkle the slag remover evenly over the molten metal surface.
  3. Allow the slag remover to react and coagulate slag for a short period.
  4. Skim off the slag gently using appropriate tools.

Dosage depends on metal type, furnace capacity, and slag condition, and should be optimized through trials or technical guidance.

Storage and Handling Recommendations

  • Store slag remover in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid moisture exposure to maintain product effectiveness.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment during handling.

Proper storage ensures consistent performance and safe operation.
